Your 12th-grade plan, whichever path you're on

Senior year has only a handful of dated gates. Everything else is preparation that looks much the same on every path. UCAS prints 15 October 2026 and 13 January 2027 as its equal consideration dates for 2027 entry (UCAS, 2027 entry). This plan lists the dates official pages actually print — and skips the ones they do not.

This is written for a 12th grader in September who wants the year laid out, whether the plan ends in an apprenticeship, a job, a uniform, a campus or an honest "not sure yet". Pathfinder treats every pathway after high school as equally valid, so nothing below assumes college.

What this can't tell you: this diagram is a phase map, not a dated calendar. Official portals print their own deadlines — verify there before you act.

What is a decisive claim, and why does senior year have so few of them?

A decisive claim is a claim — an application deadline, an admission requirement or a course requirement — where being wrong changes the decision itself. If you believe a deadline is a week later than it is, you do not get a slightly worse outcome. You get no outcome.

Two things this does not mean. It does not mean senior year is mostly deadlines: most of the year is preparation, and preparation has no printed date. And it does not mean every date you read is decisive. A revision timetable you set yourself can slip. An equal consideration date set by UCAS cannot.

So this article does something narrower than most senior-year checklists. It prints only dates that an official page states for a named cycle, and it says plainly where a date could not be read. Where there is no printed date, there is no date here.

Which dates belong on a senior year checklist this year?

These are the gates we read on 11 September 2026, each with the cycle it belongs to. The table lists the sittings still ahead on 11 September 2026; each page prints its full calendar.

Two honest notes about that table. The SAT and ACT rows are national administration dates, not your school's internal deadlines; the registration dates shown for September sittings had already passed when this was written. And the UCAS rows carry a time as well as a date — 18:00 UK time — which matters more than it looks if you are applying from another time zone.

On the money side, the opening dates people most want are not printed yet. The Federal Student Aid deadlines page prints the 2027-28 federal deadline but no opening date, and its form page says only that the 2027-28 FAFSA form is coming soon. The CSS Profile page states no 2027-28 opening date either, though it does print its fee-waiver rule: CSS Profile is free for families who make up to $100,000 a year (College Board, 2026-27). Check both pages yourself before you build a month around them.

What does September to November look like on each path?

Autumn is when each path does its own thing. The table is deliberately short; the paragraphs after it carry the detail.

Trade and apprenticeship. Start with the U.S. Department of Labor's Apprenticeship Job Finder, which lets you search open apprenticeship job opportunities from employers across the country and apply directly with the employer, filtering by career path or location. Postings whose occupation or employer is registered with the Office of Apprenticeship carry a Registered Occupation or Registered Partner tag, so you can tell a registered programme from an unregistered one. Openings are local and they appear when an employer posts them, so there is no national calendar to plan against — check weekly rather than once. Straight to work. Autumn is for a CV, two people who have agreed to be your references, and a shortlist of employers you would actually take a job with. None of that has a deadline, which is exactly why it slips.

Military. Autumn is the season for a conversation with a recruiter — ask about the ASVAB and when to sit it. We are not printing an age rule or an eligibility threshold here: the official Department of Defense page we went to confirm those on was unreachable when this was written, and a half-remembered age limit is exactly the kind of claim that changes a decision. Ask a recruiter and get it from the official page.

Community college. Check the specific institution rather than any general rule. College Navigator is the federal tool for looking up a named institution: you can search by location, programme and tuition range and build a list of schools for side-by-side comparison. It prints no application dates, so treat it as a starting point and go to the college's own admissions page for its deadlines.

University. If you are applying in the US, the Common App's 2026-27 season is open, and the announcement is dated 31 July 2026 (Common App, 2026). Individual colleges set their own deadlines, so each one has to be checked separately. If you are applying in the UK, 15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time is the equal consideration date for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine or science courses (UCAS, 2027 entry). Still deciding. Do two paths' autumn steps, not zero. Search the apprenticeship finder and open an application. Nothing you do in September commits you to anything in May.

What does December to February look like?

Winter is the money-and-paperwork block on the college routes, and a steady application rhythm on the others.

1. Financial aid forms. This is when college-bound students complete aid paperwork. For 2027-28 the federal deadline is June 30, 2028 at 11:59 p.m. CT, with corrections by Sept. 12, 2028 (Federal Student Aid, 2027-28) — but that is the outer edge. Each college and career or trade school may have its own deadline, and each state has its own, listed state by state on the same official page. Those are the dates that decide your aid, so read yours and write it in your own calendar.
2. UCAS, 13 January 2027, 18:00 UK time. The equal consideration date for most undergraduate courses in the 2027 entry cycle (UCAS, 2027 entry).
3. CSS Profile, where a college asks for it. No 2027-28 opening date is printed on its page, but the fee rule is: free for families who make up to $100,000 a year (College Board, 2026-27).
4. Apprenticeship and work applications. These do not batch. Postings appear through the winter, so the habit is a weekly check of the finder and of employers you have already contacted.
5. Military processing. Steps continue on the timeline your recruiter sets, not on a national calendar.

What does March to June look like?

Spring is decisions and paperwork you have to produce rather than fill in.

• Offers and replies. For US colleges, NACAC's guidance is that 'Colleges should use the widely recognized date of May 1 as the earliest enrollment confirmation deadline' (NACAC). Read that carefully: it is a recommendation to colleges about the earliest date they should set, not a universal deadline you can assume. Your offer letter's own date is the one that binds.
• UCAS, 30 June 2027, 18:00 UK time. Applications received by this deadline will be sent to universities and colleges (UCAS, 2027 entry).
• Apprenticeship start dates. These are set by the employer and the programme. They are local facts. The finder is the place to read them.
• Enlistment steps. Again, on your recruiter's timeline.
• Final transcripts. Almost every route asks for one at the end, and almost nobody plans for it.

What stays the same whichever path you take?

The paperwork. Evidence is the documents and artefacts you attach to prove a claim or requirement — a transcript, a score report, a project — kept in one place. The list barely changes by path.

Two habits carry the rest of the year. The first is a weekly mission: one prioritised action each week, with a check-in when it stalls. Senior year is lost in weeks where nothing happened, not in dramatic mistakes. The second is a primary and a backup path held at the same time. One unhedged bet on a single outcome is the most common way a senior year goes wrong.

What can't these numbers tell you?

They cannot tell you what will happen to you. A published deadline describes a process, not your result. Here is where this article stops.

• Dates are per cycle and per institution. The UCAS dates above are 2027 entry. The SAT and ACT dates are the 2026-27 administrations. Next year's are different, and a college's own deadline is not any of these.
• State and college deadlines differ from federal ones. Aid deadlines set by your state and by each college sit inside the federal window and are frequently earlier. The federal deadline above is the last date, not the date that decides your aid.
• Apprenticeship openings are local and unscheduled. There is no national date for them. A finder result today is not a forecast of what is open in March.
• One missing source. The Department of Defense entrance-requirements page did not load for us, so no military age or eligibility rule appears here at all. An absent fact is better than an invented one.

How do you decide what to do this week?

Turn the national dates into questions only you can answer:

1. Which of the dates above actually applies to me? Most of them will not. Cross out the rest, and the year gets smaller.
2. What is the next dated gate on my path, and where is it printed? If you cannot name the page it is printed on, that is this week's task.
3. Which document do I not have yet? Transcript, ID, references, score report. Get one of them this week.
4. Who is the one person I have not spoken to? A recruiter, an employer, a counsellor, an admissions office. One conversation usually replaces an hour of searching.
5. What is my backup? Choosing a primary path and an explicit backup path beats one unhedged bet.
6. Am I ready to choose at all? "Still deciding" is a legitimate answer and a perfectly good thing to plan around in September.
